Get ready for MOT! Check out these 9 steps

9 Essential Checks Before Your MOT Test

Getting ready for your MOT doesn’t have to be stressful! A few simple checks can save you time, money, and hassle. Here’s your easy-to-follow pre-MOT checklist:

1. Check Your MOT Date

Don’t get caught out! Book your MOT well in advance to avoid last-minute panic.
Tip: MOT reminders aren’t sent automatically. Check your last MOT certificate or visit gov.uk to confirm your date.

2. Brakes

Your safety depends on good brakes.

Inspect brake pads for wear-replace if they’re close to the limit.
Take a short drive and listen for squeaking or grinding noises.

3. Suspension

Smooth rides matter!

Drive over a few bumps and listen for knocking sounds (a sign of worn suspension).
Check shock absorbers for leaks.

4. Tyre Pressure & Tread

Stay safe and legal.

Inflate tyres to the recommended pressure (usually found on a sticker inside the driver’s door).
Tread depth must be at least 1.6mm-use a tread gauge or the 20p coin trick!

5. Headlights

See and be seen.

Make sure both headlights work and are properly aligned.

6. Rear Lights

Don’t forget the back!
Test brake lights, reversing lights, and indicators.
BMW drivers: Don’t forget those indicators! 😉

7. Wipers & Washer Fluid

Clear vision is a must.

Check wiper blades for wear and effectiveness.
Top up washer fluid if needed.

8. Oil Level

Keep your engine happy.

Ensure oil is above the minimum mark.
Use the dipstick or, in newer cars, check via the infotainment system.

9. Dashboard Warning Lights

No warning lights should be on!

Check for engine, ABS, airbag, or brake system lights-any of these could mean MOT failure.
